The NASCAR Cup Series: The Crayon 301

Loudon, New Hampshire--New Hampshire Motor Speedway hosted the Crayon 301. This was the 20th the NASCAR Cup Series race of the 2023 season for The National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR).  A day for drivers to gain valuable points in the playoff picture, or gain that win that would snap a winless streak to get them into the playoff picture.

7/16/2023: The day of the Crayon 301-Weather conditions that morning proved not to be good for racing. As early as 10:00 AM, alerts were issued for flash floods and even tornadoes.   By 10:48 AM, it was announced that the Crayon 301 would not be run that day. This postponed race was rescheduled for Monday 7/17/2023 at 12 PM (Noon). New Hampshire Motor Speedway had a weather guarantee in place to provide an exchange for a future race for those who were unable to return to the track for the Crayon 301.

7/17/2023:  The weather of the day before passed, leaving behind clear skies. The parking area of the New Hampshire Motor Speedway was filling up with a decent sized crowd there for a great race. Passing through the multiple lots leading up the race track, one could see fans sitting outside their campers and cars enjoying the sunshine and the atmosphere. The ground that was muddy the prior morning was dry. The speedway’s tram passed by as those on foot were making their way over to go through the gates to see the race.

Drivers were introduced at 11:20 AM and the anticipation for the race led up to 12:00 PM (Noon).  Here are some news and notes from that afternoon:

*Ryan Blaney (#12) was looking toward winning another Monday race after taking the checkered flag at the Coca-Cola 600 on May 29th, 2023 in Charlotte, North Carolina.

* Martin Truex Jr. (#19) was on his hometown track.

*Kyle Busch in the # 8 car experienced trouble towards the final lap of Stage 1, raising one of the first caution flags of the day. Busch would turn into Pit Row to have his car evaluated at the start of Stage 2, which would not be enough to keep him in the race.

*Aric Almirola (#10) worked his way up to the front of the pack of cars behind Truex Jr. Denny Hamlin (# 11) was in pursuit of Truex Jr. and Almirola. Almirola would hold the lead for a few laps before a loose tire would send his car scraping the wall and ending his race day.

*The action in the race was consistent as the competition tried to figure out how to stop the momentum of the leading #19 car. Kevin Harvick (# 4), Austin Dillon (#3) and Kyle Larson (#5) would advance in the field of cars only to get passed by a motivated Martin Truex Jr…. Joey Logano (#22) had laps driving along or next to the bumper of Truex Jr., and nearly pulled ahead in some instances.

*The race was run with few cautions.

*The track speed benefitted the cars and the distance between cars increased throughout each lap as the drivers wove in and out of the middle of the pack to try to get within a car length to the race leader at the time.

*The winner of the Crayon 301 was Martin Truex Jr. (#19). Under the clear skies of Loudon, Martin celebrated his victory and saluted the fans in attendance on his way back to the pit area. To commemorate his victory, he received the Crayon 301 trophy as well as a lobster.

In dominant fashion , Martin Truex Jr. received the checkered flag at the same track his father raced. Truex Jr.’s may have been earned this moment a day later due to Mother Nature, but the win was worth the wait.

While the observations did come from my own notes and the post-race interview with Martin Truex Jr., I want to thank the sources I used for race information this blog:

This Time Last Week: NASCAR Coca-Cola 600 Observations

The National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR) was at Charlotte Motor Speedway Memorial Day weekend.  Ahead of the weekend, the weather report called for rain and rain it did.

5/27/2023: The day of the NASCAR Xfinity Series race- The Xfinity Series race was postponed due to inclement weather and rescheduled to Monday 5/29/2023…. Time would tell if the Coca-Cola 600 scheduled for the next day would be run as scheduled

5/28/2023: The day of the Coca-Cola 600:

The General Admission parking lot started to fill up around 10 am with racing fans setting up tents and coolers getting ready to enjoy the day’s festivities.

The Circle K area was where the pre-race started. There were “Spin and Win” games, contests to enter, and giveaways.  Weather permitting, there would be appearances and question and answer segments with drivers throughout the afternoon leading up to the race as well as a pre-race concert from the Doobie Brothers.

The weather was the same as the day before. The crews at Charlotte Motor Speedway were hard at work drying the track to get it ready. After a while, it was determined that the Coca-Cola 600 race be postponed and set for Monday 5/29/2023 at 3PM; the pre-race concert was cancelled.

5/29/2023: Charlotte Motor Speedway hosted both the Xfinity Series race and the Coca-Cola 600…The Xfinity Series race started at 11 AM.  This race was paused at lap 48 of 200 due to the rain, and did resume at the conclusion of the Coca-Cola 600.

Track crews did a great job of drying the track in time for the 3pm running of the Coca-Cola 600… The Memorial Day holiday was observed by a moment of silence as well as a member of the armed forces playing “Taps”… The call to the drivers to start their engines was given.

The 4 stages of the Coca-Cola 600 were exciting to witness.  Here are some observations from the afternoon into evening that was:

*Jimmie Johnson in the # 84 car tapped the wall in Stage 1 and would turn into Pit Row to have adjustments made to his car throughout the race.

*It was interesting to watch the crowd reactions.  There were fans who held up the car number of their favorite driver…The spectators would stand up as the pace car went into Pit Row to signal the race restart/Green Flag

*Around Lap 185 of Stage 2, Denny Hamlin (#11) had a run-in with Chase Elliott(# 9).  Denny’s car was hit and started spinning out before settling on the grass near the start/finish line.  The driver was tended to and the track crew towed the #11 car back into the pit area.  This collision would conclude the race days for both Hamlin and Elliott and result in Elliott receiving a 1 race suspension.

*The action in the race really picked up during the last 30 laps of Stage 3. The racers were able to get distance on the track and create momentum to carry them into the 4th and final stage of the race.

*The Final Stage took place under the Charlotte Motor Speedway lights as the race ran into the night…Racers would experience quite the stage as they drove amid caution/yellow flags that came in amid the last 30 or so laps of the race.

*When the checkered flag was waved, the winner of the race was Ryan Blaney (# 12). The victory at the Coca-Cola 600 snapped the winless streak for Blaney.  In the post-race interview, Blaney expressed his gratitude to the crowd in the Charlotte Motor Speedway stands.

The Coca-Cola 600 was my first NASCAR race. The Charlotte Motor Speedway was a great environment to watch a sporting event.  Everyone attending the race enjoyed their day at the track. The 2023 Memorial Day weekend will be remembered for a winless streak broken and a forecast you had to experience to believe.
