Red Carpet Report: “The Wolverine” Fan Event

On July 23rd, 2013, the AMC Theater Empire 25 in Times Square hosted “The Wolverine” Fan Event.  Those that attended were lined up on a moderately humid afternoon around the block since before 4:00pm and ready to see the latest installment in the Marvel superhero’s saga. Each devoted fan held unto their tickets to the 5:30 event-which was split into theaters 6 and 9 to meet the demand.

The line started to move around 5pm. The security guards verified each had tickets for the screening before admitting them inside.  The personnel in the lobby directed the eager crowd to the special fan event line, where each got their ticket hole-punched, and received a red bracelet or yellow bracelet depending on the time of their screening. Fans also received a lanyard commemorating the event along with foam claws and “The Wolverine” movie t-shirt that had the film’s design art on the front and the release date on the back.
Directed next to the 2nd level of the theater, the lanyard gained the people access to the premiere party already in progress. Z100 DJs were there to give away posters and X-Men Trilogy DVDs signed by Hugh Jackman. The crowd was given free concession items, such as M&Ms and Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups as well as bottled water. Inside the live music was heard through the speakers as the people lined the guardrails on both sides that were set up to allow a special guest to pass. Out the double doors to the right housed a mini-red carpet path leading to the Garden Terrace, and reporters prepping the tools of their trade for that person as well.

Prior to the screening, there was more to the party than fan mingling and free giveaways and concession items. “The Wolverine” star Hugh Jackman came by the AMC Theater to greet the crowd assembled. Emerging from the elevator, Hugh walked the carpeted area leading to the indoor stage set-up. There, he looked out on the company gathered, and took a few questions from the audience. In these inquiries, he addressed the change that took place in his character-Logan/The Wolverine-since the character was last seen. Among the curious questions, there was one about the possibility of an appearance in “the Avengers” movie universe and one about a movie pitting Wolverine against the Hulk (“Wolverine takes out the Hulk in about 5 minutes. What would you do with the rest of the movie?”-Hugh’s response)

By 7:00pm, the first screening group was shown their way to the theater 6. That gave Hugh Jackman the chance to mingle with the Garden Terrace crowd. He took a moment to greet everyone from the dais set up before walking the red carpet to interact with them.  Star-Struck people were amazed they had just spoken to him, got his autograph, or even had a moment of his time. Hugh was gracious to all and that was a courtesy that fans will always remember.

After Hugh mingled with the people and spoke with the press, he made his exit. That left more time for poster and signed DVD giveaways before the 7:30pm call to gather at the barrier for the movie screening at theater 9. Everyone going in got the RealD 3D glasses and free popcorn. Finding the best seat in the movie theater had one moving through gaps and asking if seats were being reserved. I was lucky to find a 2nd row center seat. Before I knew it, the warning to turn off cellphones was given and “The Wolverine” movie began to appear on the screen.

Two hours or so later, fans filed out. Ecstatic over what they had just seen, many wondered how long they could keep this film’s amazing moments a secret. I for one will continue to do so as many of you reading this need to see this movie to believe it.

Broadway about the Town: Stars off the Stage

There are other chances to catch Broadway stars than the theater-though I highly recommend you catch a show while you are in town.  During the summer and early fall, there are places to enjoy hearing them perform and support good causes at the same time:

Broadway Barks! (July 13th, 2013): Hosted by Bernadette Peters and Mary Tyler Moore for 15 years, this event connects fans with actors from their favorite shows as well as animals that need a new home. Numerous shelters are represented and raise money at their tables through donations, dog and cat products, and signed items.  After walking around Schubert Alley, be sure to get a good spot by the stage, where the event’s hostesses introduce the shelters which are present with their pets up for adoption; Broadway actors join the shelters on stage to introduce some of the animals by name and personality

Broadway in Bryant Park (Every Thursday July 11th, 2013-August 15th, 2013)-106.7 LiteFM sponsors this annual event to give people a theater experience in a beautiful open setting. Held in Bryant Park in Midtown Manhattan, It is hosted by a DJ from that radio station every Thursday for at least 6 weeks. The featured shows for that week are usually listed on the free programs and Bryant Park’s event calendar site (http://www.bryantpark.org/plan-your-visit/broadway.html ). The actors have a side stage set up for camera crews to film them and for fortunately situated fans to get autographs. *Disclaimer: the event can be cancelled due to weather.  It has been held in the hazy weeks of summer, so keep in mind to stay hydrated. Also be aware that a Broadway show can close prior to their Bryant Park appearance, in which case a previewed show slides into that slot.

Annual Broadway Flea Market (September 22nd, 2013)-Another tradition, this event is entering its 27th year. The proceeds go to Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS and spans Times Square from 10am to 7pm. The shows set up tables and sell anything from autographed items to actual performance costumes. There are other vendors that offer the passerby a look through archived Playbills, programs and soundtracks. Anyone that enjoys Broadway should find the line that leads to a wheel of chance for various prizes-one of which is a chance to pick a pair of tickets from a box of envelopes;  It really works-I won tickets to see “STOMP!” last year in addition to magnets  and assorted surprise items.

Welcome to the NHL 2013 Draft: Players Selected and Trades Made

Newark, New Jersey-the National Hockey League drafted its newest members yesterday at the Prudential Center. There were interesting themes of legacies and intrigue spread throughout the 3pm-10pm event.

Intrigue seems to be the more interesting place to start. The youth additions are important, but some would not be in their draft ranking were it not for these deals. The host team gained a “post-Martin Brodeur Era goalie” in Vancouver’s Cory Schneider at the expense of their 1st round pick…Stanley Cup Champion Chicago Blackhawks dealt Dave Bolland to the Toronto Maple Leafs and Michael Frolik to the Winnipeg Jets to make up salary cap room to promptly re-sign Bryan Bickell for 4 more years…Jamie McBain of the Carolina Hurricanes was shipped to the Buffalo Sabres in exchange for Andrej Sekera and a 2ND round draft pick…New York Islander Nino Niederreiter and his soon expiring entry level contract were traded to the Minnesota Wild in exchange for Cal Clutterbuck and a 3rd round pick…various picks were bartered as well as GMs were willing to deal in order to get their desired players.

Legacies were honored during the draft as well, some even from different sports. A few examples: Seth Jones -drafted #4 by the Nashville Predators is the son of NBA player Popeye Jones…Carolina Hurricanes’  #5 selection Elias Lindholm’s lineage traces back to father Mikael Lindholm…Edmonton Oilers’ #7 pick Darnell Nurse has NFL player Donovan McNabb for an uncle…#12  first rounder Max Domi may call Phoenix his new hockey home, but his skills came from father Tie Domi...Tyler Bertuzzi is the nephew of NHL veteran Todd Bertuzzi…Eric Comrie is the half-brother of NHL player Mike Comrie…Anthony Brodeur joins his father Martin in the New Jersey Devils organization

Overall consensus: Every team coming into the 2013-2014 season has to cut cap space as a result of the new CBA. This draft class could be the key to keeping teams under the stricter cap. The selections on this day included familiar names that suggest greatness or come from systems that do such as the Halifax Mooseheads and the London Knights.

As for the team hosting the draft, the cap limitations are not the only problem. The New Jersey Devils have issues with ownership as their owner cannot handle the monetary investment required to keep the team. Their tactics to front-load an extended deal for Ilya Kovalchuk will result in a mandatory forfeited first round draft pick next year.

I wish the NHL picks best of luck. Welcome to the newly realigned National Hockey League.
